Need
Mariel, which is located 50 km west of Havana, hosts an already active and constantly growing, extended industrial park, the biggest in the Gulf of Mexico. The last lot, called A6, is currently under construction. This lot, similarly to all the already operating lots, will be connected to a sewage, that needs a plant to treat wastewater coming from the different factories to discharge it to a water course. The volume of wastewater to treat is unknown, because we do not know yet the number and type of factories that are settling up here.
Solution
We know of the quality of wastewater to treat, but not the daily volume of wastewater in the mid and long term. Since a great effort in flexibility is required, we designed the plant in 3 identical modules, which can be realised separately. Seeing as how the treatment plant will be managed by the local staff, which is not specialised in water treatment, we opted for the MBBR technology (see link), in particular for its space-saving feature and ease in management.
We designed and realised a treatment plant using the prefabricated technology aiming to speed up and secure the construction work: circular tanks in glazed steel to set up on site, two lamella clarifiers in stainless steel, as well as a technical room with machines and the electrical system inside two equipped 40’ HC shipping containers. Most of the electromechanical equipments left Italy already installed, wired and tested. The completion time, scheduled for the end of October, is equal to 5 weeks.
